creativity knows no limits

book
trilogy

defining

For this project I was assigned the task of designing three book covers inspired by the narratives of the Criminal podcast, hosted by Phoebe Judge, with the intention of creating a trilogy. I chose to listen to How to Sell A Haunted House, Ian Manuel, and Sanctuary as the episodes to base my designs on.

ideation

I began this project by listening to each podcast, taking notes, and brainstorming ideas. I then began sketching out my ideas based on the information I had gathered. In this stage I didn't worry about how I would be tying each book cover together. Instead, I wanted to ensure that each design conveyed what the story might be about.

After narrowing down my sketches to one design per book, I chose to focus on one story and experiment with different media. I made sure to keep my options open and play around before finalizing the medium I'd work in for the last two books.

I chose to create each book cover using clay, and proceeded to craft the final two objects I'd need. I then went into Photoshop to touch up the images, and used Illustrator and InDesign to finalize the overall layout.

A unified book trilogy had been achieved using sculpted clay figures, color, type, and the overall layout. How to Sell A Haunted House served as the foundation, upon which I crafted the covers for Ian Manuel and Sanctuary utilizing a consistent design concept.
